Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has said that the Sri Lanka Navy deserves the honour of converting the Indian Ocean into a zero terrorism Zone.
He was addressing a maritime conference organized at the Light House Hotel in Galle with the theme “Charting the course for sustainable maritime cooperation.” The Defence Secretary who was the Chief Guest at the launching of the conference said not a single country can confront terrorism alone. He emphasized that the cooperation of other countries was vital to suppress terrorism. He pointed out that the international community should share intelligence to crackdown on human smuggling.
The two-day conference will make stage for greater insights and lessons on related maritime security issues including sea-piracy, arms/drugs trafficking and human smuggling. It has been organized jointly by the Ministry of Defence and the Sri Lanka Navy. The participating nations are Australia, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, South Africa, Singapore, Sri Lanka, South-Korea, United-States and Oman.
