The era of political interference on admission to Grade One has been eliminated. Minister Bandula Gunawardena participating in the Thulawa Programme telecast live over ITN yesterday said that admissions will be carried out at the school level but under the supervision of the Education Ministry.
The Minister pointed out that the Cabinet has approved the new admission procedure. Accordingly politicians will not interfere. There is an Interview Committee handling the procedure. It comprises the Principal, the Deputy Principal, the Primary Principal, a member of the School Development Society representing the parents and a representative of the Past Pupils Association. The Ministry will monitor the work. It any chaos is reported, the Ministry will not turn a blind eye.
The Minister said that plans are afoot to eliminate the concept of popular schools. He revealed of the Ministry’s desire to upgrade 1000 more schools. The Minister opined that one of the four Primary Schools in the area will be upgraded and classes will be conducted from above Grade Six. These schools will have sports, computer laboratory, laboratory and all other facilities. This will totally eliminate the popular schools concept. He added that 1000 such schools are being planned throughout the country.
