Outgoing South Carolina school superintendent Jim Rex says his replacement will face a continuing funding crises.
Rex told The Greenville News that whoever wins the November election will have a better chance to show South Carolina's schools are not the worst in the country.
He says the end of federal stimulus funds will be a challenge in the coming year. South Carolina has lost 4,000 teachers in the past two years.
Rex lost his effort to get the Democratic gubernatorial nomination in June.
He says the next education superintendent will have a better chance to show improvement as more states adopt a common set of standards.
