The removal of mines planted by the terrorists within the Jaffna Peninsula is now being accelerated. Jaffna Commanding Officer Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe said that the removal of mine in many areas including Nannankalappu has been stepped up.
Major General Hathurusinghe pointed out that de-mining in many areas in Jaffna has been completed. Only 699 families are remaining to be resettled in Jaffna. Their resettlement will be completed within one and half months and the required infrastructure is now being developed.
Many International Agencies including the De-mining Unit of Denmark are extending support to the Army Engineering Force in the removal of mines. The Army is handling the removal of mines along the Northern rail track. Work on the Northern track will commence as soon as the de-mining work is completed.
