The government has revealed to parliament that it had been unable to collect estimated tax revenue to the tune of Rs. 9,402 million last year.
The government had informed parliament about this matter in response to a question by UNP parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake.
Deputy Finance Minister Chandrasiri Gajadeera told parliament that the government had taken steps to identify new tax payers and expedite the process of tax collection.
The information released to parliament by the government stated that the government estimated to collect Rs.150, 922 by way of tax revenue last year.
However, it was able to collect only Rs. 141,520 million.
The government had failed to collect Rs. 11,568, million of the estimated revenue in 2008, and Rs. 6,159 million in 2007.
Nevertheless, there was an over recovery of Rs.4, 562 million in 2006.
