It was on a day such as today in 1992 that Denzil Kobbekaduwa including the other war heroes laid down their lives on behalf of the country. The Jaffna Peninsula was under the LTTE rule in an era when sparks of terrorism flew not only over the North and East, but over the entire country. Major Gen. Denzil Kobbekaduwa and the Security Chiefs in Jaffna were planning for several months to eliminate terrorism and liberate the people. The battles had to be led only over land as Jaffna was inaccessible from sea or air. To find a strategic route, General Kobbekaduwa and the other Security chiefs had gone to Araly Point from Kayts in a jeep. They were caught up in a bomb explosion on their return trip from Araly Point to Kayts. Their jeep was smashed in the explosion and Major General Denzil Kobbekaduwa as well as Brig. Vijaya Wimalaratne and the other security chiefs who had sustained serious injuries made the supreme sacrifice at a point of time when victory was within sight. He was not fortunate enough to see the results of a number of operations including Vadamarachchi that inflicted serious damage to the terrorists. Today, the motherland is enjoying the peace which was the dream of these war heroes who breathed their last after working strenuously day and night to achieve this end. The highest form of gratitude the nation could express to heroes such as Major Gen. Kobbekaduwa is to preserve the peace that has been achieved.
