Sri Lanka dispatches first aid consignment to Pakistan

Sri Lanka dispatched the first consignment of aid on behalf of Pakistanis who experienced the worst ever floods.

The programme is being implemented on the instructions of President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Earlier the President contacted the Pakistani Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani on telephone and expressed his grief. He also promised to provide relief for the victims. Accordingly, arrangements were made to airlift 18 thousand kilograms of dry rations today. The remaining goods will be dispatched in several phases. Meanwhile, the Health Ministry has announced that a team of Doctors consisting of 15 Specialists will be sent to Pakistan within the next three days. The team will be headed by Deputy Director of Lady Ridgeway Hospital in Colombo Dr. Vijith Gunasekera. The Government has made arrangements to include Doctors who have gained much experience during the Tsunami and the humanitarian operation.
