Tomorrow marks the 200th day since the disappearance of Lanka-e-News journalist and cartoonist Prageeth Eknaligoda. To commemorate the event and pressure the government to solve the case, the Alliance of Media Organizations is staging a protest tomorrow (10 August) at 3 PM at Viharamahadevi Park in Colombo. This will be followed by a seminar at the Public Library.
Eknaligoda disappeared on January 24th, shortly before the Presidential election on January 26th. Government investigation has been haphazard – early hearings of a habeas corpus case were adjourned and the police did not appear at the sixth and more recent hearing.
In a statement, the International Federation of Journalists has expressed support for the protest saying” The IFJ calls upon its affiliates worldwide to show solidarity by contacting their local Sri Lankan missions to express their concerns at the police and security agencies’ failure to trace the missing journalist.”
Eknaligoda has a wife and two sons.
