Asian heavyweights India and Sri Lanka along with New Zealand will begin their World Cup preparations with a Tri Series limited overs cricket tournament which gets underway at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium today.
India will take on New Zealand in the curtain raiser match of the tournament while Sri Lanka will come out for the first time on Friday with a clash against New Zealand.
The three teams will play each other twice on a league basis and the two top sides will play in the final which is scheduled for August 28. A reserve day has been allocated for all seven matches of the tournament.
All three teams are keen to put up a good performance and build up their confidence with the ICC World Cup tournament which will be staged in the sub continent just six months away.
The tournament also carries a great amount of significance with all three teams having a great chance of clinching the second place of the International Cricket Council team rankings. Another factor the teams will be considering is the opportunity to play a major tournament on a slow turning wicket where the batsmen will need to produce great skills to score runs while batting second under lights.
