Take dire action against women and child abuse – President

President Rajapaksa gives instructions to the Child Protection Authority to take dire action against abuses related to children and women.

A meeting to review progress on the Ministry of Child Development and Women’s Affairs was held at Temple Trees and chaired by the President. The President instructed the relevant authorities to strictly enforce the law against persons who are engaged in women and child abuse. The need for a streamlined programme for the daily monitoring of children of Children’s homes was stressed. He advised the immediate launching of a programme to institute legal action against children’s homes with less facilities and where children are subject to abuses.

The need for the appointment of Civil Committees near children’s homes was pointed out at this meeting. The committee should compose of Monks of the temple as well as a Police Officer and a State official. The President instructed the implementation of a programme to build the mentality of children of parents who are out of the country as well as those in Prisons. Underscoring that all actions are being initiated on behalf of the children, the President emphasized that the attention of all elders should be drawn to protecting them. It is not an equal but a sacred position that the women enjoy under his Government.

The President clarified the responsibilities that should be meted out by women on behalf of the children, safeguarding the status of the mother, the wife and the sister. Instructions were given for the implementation of a programme to provide a glass of milk for pre-school children. Problems of non-school going children should be identified and a programme crafted to address them. He gave instructions to the officials to submit him with a debrief report at the end of all programmes.
