A number of programmes are being launched to make Sri Lanka an International gem and jewellery trading centre.
Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa said that arrangements are underway to set up 5 sales outlets and an international laboratory. The Minister made this observation when he participated in a programme to issue licences for gem dealers at the Ratnapura office of the Gem and Jewellery Authority. Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa said that they would like to provide the opportunity for anyone to sell gems at these outlets. He was of the view that it is a difficult task to accomplish, without assistance from the Gem Corporation. The Gem Traders’ Association and the Gem Corporation are jointly planning to set up an internationally recognized laboratory in Colombo. He said that 90 million rupees has been allocated in this connection and the initial work is being launched.
Government to minimize flood threats around Bolgoda lake
The Government has drawn plans to minimize flood threats in the areas surrounding the Bolgoda lake.
Ministers Nimal Siripala de Silva and Gamini Lokuge toured the area recently. It is expected to convert the area into a tourist destination. Plans have been drawn up to launch a boat service from Panadura to Bellanwila. The Ministers pointed out that the project would bring a number of benefits to the people in the area.
