Contractors started snapping up appliance rebates first thing this morning.
Just two hours after South Carolina?s ?cash for appliance clunkers? rebate program started, contractors already had reserved more than half of the $1.95 million available to them, according to the S.C. Energy Office. Contractors give their customers forms to get mail-in rebates.
Other consumers, however, were slower to take advantage of at-the-register savings. By 8:30 a.m., only 7 percent of the $1.95 million for those purchases had been used.
There were no customers waiting in line when the Best Buy on Harbison Boulevard opened early at 8 a.m.
Overall, about $1.2 million of the $3.9 million earmarked for the rebates were taken in the first hours of the program. The pot was split evenly between rebates available from contractors and stores.
