Authorities have identified a body found along a dirt road in rural South Carolina as a woman reported missing by her fiance.
The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office confirmed Wednesday that the body was that of 27-year-old Alexis Lukaitis of Bluffton. The Post and Courier of Charleston reported that her body was found Monday in the Parkers Ferry community.
Charleston County authorities said Lukaitis appears to have suffered knife wounds. The Charleston County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death as a homicide.
Lukaitis' missing car was found Wednesday morning by a Bluffton police officer who was on patrol.
Lukaitis was reported missing Monday morning by her fiance, 32-year-old Michael Bartley. He told Beaufort County deputies that she left Sunday afternoon to take a friend to Charleston and was supposed to return Sunday evening.
