The head of the Inland Revenue Department’s Provincial Office in Matara is currently receiving treatment at the Matara Hospital after being attacked by an unidentified group of men yesterday (11) evening.
Secretary of the Inland Revenue General Employees Union, Ajith Galhena told The Sunday Leader that head of the Matara office and Deputy Commissioner H.M. Denzil was attacked by a group of men while he was returning home in a bus last evening.
“He has sustained severe injuries and is now being treated at the Matara Hospital,” he said.
Although the attackers have not been identified, Galhena said it is suspected that the group of thugs may have attacked Denzil due to the strict procedures followed by him in order to collect taxes due to the state.
Galhena observed that the attack on Denzil is a result of Mervyn Silva’s actions last week, where he tied a Samurdhi officer to a tree for not attending a dengue prevention programme.
“Mervyn’s actions has now prompted people to take the law into their own hands and the jungle law prevails. This attack is due to that,” he said.
Galhena called on the government establish law and order in the country and to take action against Denzil’s attackers.
