Minister Johnston Fernando has said that either a decrease in the paddy price or an increase in the rice price will not take place.
The Paddy Marketing Board has an excessive stock of 800,000 metric tons. The warehouses of the are full to capacity. As an alternative, temporary storage facilities have been ordered from India and the World Food Programme. These will reach the island within this month. At present paddy stocks are being directed to empty warehouses where the paddy harvests are low. The Minister said that if required, private warehouses will be obtained.
