It was revealed at today’s cabinet meeting that there were up to 66000 families living in a ‘haphazard manner’ in some of Colombo’s choicest land. The Cabinet today approved a plan put forward by the Urban Development Authority to clear these slums and to use the land for other purposes.
‘There are more than 450 acres of prime land being occupied by these families. We hope to utilize 78 acres of this land for leasing purposes. The rest of the land will be used to provide organized housing for these people’ Said Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa speaking at a press conference soon after the cabinet meeting.
The land is to be leased at Rs.2mn per perch and is expected to raise upto Rs 5bn in total. These funds will be then used for projects of the U.D.A.
