President Rajapaksa has said that there is a responsibility vested in the youths in building a disciplined society in a salutary country. The President made this comment joining in the inauguration of the International Youth Year.
The ceremony held at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stdium marked the inauguration of the International the International Youth Year under the theme “Dialogue and Mutual Understanding.”
The President said that he witnessed the smiling faces of the young men and women on his arrival at the venue. Such smiling faces are also witnessed throughout the country. They have placed trust and confidence in the youth generation to build and develop the country. It is important that they march forward by safeguarding the freedom won by young war heroes, sacrificing their lives and limbs. The youth should make a vital contribution to develop the country. He said he was handing over this responsibility to the youth. They should make a concerted effort to help in developing the country and building a disciplined society.
Speaking further, the President opined this was an era which fulfils the expectations of the young men and women of the country. It was opportune that the International Year of the Youth had been declared during such a period. A web site was also launched on behalf of the inauguration of the International Year of the Youth. In addition the President issued a commemorative stamp and a First Day Cover. Chairman of the National Youth Services Council and Director General Piyum Perera also expressed his views.
