The owner of a Hispanic convenience store and an illegal immigrant have been sentenced to federal prison for their roles in making and selling fake identification cards in South Carolina.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reports Friday that owner and permanent resident Fermin Gonzalez-Mendoza was sentenced to 21 months in prison. Daniel Morales-Ramirez was sentenced to two years in prison. Both are 37.
Prosecutors says undercover officers bought Mexican driver's licenses, Social Security cards and fake permanent resident cards through the scheme. They say customers had their pictures taken at Gonzalez-Mendoza's Charleston store, and Morales-Ramirez filled the orders from a Goose Creek home.
The wife of Gonzalez-Mendoza, who manned the counter, received probation.
