The JVP today (14) called for the immediate release of the DNA members who were arrested by the police following protest organized by the party in Galle on Thursday (12).
The protesters condemned the arrest of its party members who participated in a peaceful protest in Galle calling for the release of DNA Leader Retired General Sarath Fonseka.
Thousands of protesters gathered opposite the Fort Railway station at 4 p.m. led by several JVP leaders and shouted anti-government slogans protesting the arrest of JVP Propaganda Secretary and DNA MP Vijitha Herath, MP Ajith Kumara, Provincial Councilor Nalin Hewage and 10 other DNA members.
Hundreds of police riot squad members were deployed in the Fort area during the period of the protest and the water canon was also kept on stand-by.
However, the protest ended without any major incidents.
The arrested DNA members are to be presented in court on Monday (16).
