The Criminal Investigations Department is vested with inquiring into an incident related to the selling of medicinal drugs to a pharmacy. These drugs had been imported to provide to patients visiting Government hospitals free of charge.
A special investigation team detected the stock from a private pharmacy in Pettah. There were about 55 varieties of drugs including the TNT drug which had been specially imported to be given to heart patients. Information has surfaced that a hospital employee had been involved in the selling of the drugs with the State symbol to the private pharmacy. The Health Ministry with the mediation of the Minister took immediate action to import drugs at a time when the Government was accused of a shortage of drugs in Government hospitals.
Emphasising that there should be an immediate halt to the selling of drugs to private pharmacies covertly, Minister Maithripala Sirisena pointed out that stern punishment should be meted out to those involved in such activities.
