The first Kumbal Perahera of the Kandy Esala Festival paraded the streets last night.
First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa was there to view the Perahera in addition to over 200 thousand people. A notable feature was the presence of those from remote areas in the island including the North and East due to the peaceful climate prevailing.
The Kumbal Perahera was hitherto limited to two small streets in the environs of the Dalada Maligawa. This tradition has been changed and the Perahera route has been extended.
The Diyawadana Nilame Nilanga Dela took the necessary initiative on the advice of the Asgiriya and Malwatte Mahanayake theras.
The Perahera which commenced at the auspicious time of 7.02 p.m. wended its way through the Lake Road, Dalada Veediya, D.S. Senanayake Mawatha, Temple Road, Raja Veediya, Colombo Street and returned to the Maligawa via Yatinuwara Veediya.
The Casket was carried by the Indiraja Tusker. It was the Buruma Raja and Miyan Raja Tuskers who accompanied Indi Raja. The peraheras of the Natha, Pathini, Vishnu and Kataragama Devales were also conducted.
