The Plantation Industries Ministry with the assistance of the Coconut Research Institute (CRI) and the Coconut Cultivation Board (CCB) is conducting awareness programs to make coconut growers and the public aware of the coconut leaf wilt disease which has affected a large number of coconut trees in the Southern Province.
Accordingly, several publications were produced on how to avoid the further spread of the coconut leaf wilt disease by the CRI and CCB and recommended management strategies.
A spokesman for CRI said the coconut leaf wilt disease have affected a large number of coconut cultivations in Matara, Galle and Hambantota districts.
"We are conducting training on the disease to carry the message to growers in a bid to control the coconut leaf wilt disease, which is reported to be spreading fast.," he said.
The Coconut Leaf Wilt Disease is caused by a group of organisms called phytoplasma, which live in the phloem tissue.
