The Inland Revenue Department (IRD) officials are to carry out a sick note campaign tomorrow (18) to protest last week’s attack on Deputy Commissioner and head of the Department’s Matara office.
Deputy Commissioner H.M. Denzil was attacked last week by an unidentified group of men while he was on his way home after work.
Trade unions affiliated IRD said a sick note campaign will be carried out tomorrow (18).
President of the IRD Deputy Tax Commissioners’ Union Sarath de Costa told a press conference that tax officers are now demanding protection to carry out their duties.
He said the officers have to collect taxes for the government for the benefit of the people, but are under threat by tax defaulters who wield political patronage and links to underworld thugs.
According to trade unionists, 50% of the work at the IRD will come to a standstill from tomorrow due to the stoppage of all field work by tax officers.
