Immediate measures are being taken to develop the rail track from Medawachchiya to Talaimannar.
Minister Kumara Welgama pointed out that the rail track from Palai in Vavuniya up to Kankesanthurai is now under construction. Also, the track up to Kataragama is now coming up. He described the train as the only mode of transport which is very convenient to the public.
The signing of the agreement relevant to the construction of the rail track took place under the patronage of India’s High Commissioner Ashok K. Kantha at the Transport Ministry today. India’s Ircon Company General Manager S.L. Gupta and General Manager Railways P.P. Wijesekera inked the agreement. The length of the track will be 110 kilometres. There will be six main bridges. The first stage from Medawachchiya to Madhu is estimated to cost 7350 million rupees. It will be ready by the end of next year. The second stage from Madhu to Talaimannar will incur an expenditure of over 17 billion rupees. Six Railway stations will come up between Medawachchiya and Talaimannar.
