Prime Minister D M Jayaratne affirmed that just as the Government was unwavering with regard to the eradication of terrorism, it will take measures to end the use of narcotics in the country in the same manner.
The Prime Minister pointed out that the Government intends to setup a nationwide program to prevent narcotics use and that large-scale drug dealers will be heavily penalised.
Jayaratne made these comments as the chief guest of the 2010 National Awards Ceremony of the Temperance Movement. The event was held at the Sarvodaya Head office, Moratuwa Monday.
The Prime Minister said drug items are being sold in the vicinity of schools and the perpetrators will be apprehended and brought to justice.
He said, "Our children hold the future of this country and the Government will never let them go astray because of misconduct.
The Government lost millions of rupees in revenue by enacting the Narcotics Act, it was a measure implemented with the intention of eradicating the use of narcotics in the country".
