3 furniture traders from Moratuwa were attacked when they started doing business in Jaffna on Monday. The traders were attacked by armed men who then set fire to their goods before leaving.
Initial reports indicate that the violence had nothing to do with ethnic rivalries. Senior Policeman in the area Mr. Padmedewa, speaking to the Sunday Leader, said ‘the dispute was purely trade oriented, it was not because of ethnic rivalry. It had happened when the furniture suppliers, upon supplying furniture to a retailer, were then asked to come back after a month. Something which they found disagreeable.’
Reports indicate that two of the three traders were heavily injured and are now recuperating at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital. The Jaffna police said that the attackers have not been apprehended as yet. They had reportedly escaped before the authorities reached the crime scene.
