A bumper paddy harvest is being received from the Yala Season in the Polonnaruwa District.
All lands in the District have been brought under cultivation with the support of the Irrigation Network. Harvesting is in progress on 53,000 hectares. The total expected yield is about 238,000 metric tons. Hitherto only half of this land had been cultivated.
District Secretary Nimal Abeysiri said that cultivation was not disrupted due to any water shortage. 14 purchasing centres have been established.
Purchases are being made by Cooperatives, the paddy Marketing Board, the Mahaweli Authority and the Private Sector. Government hopes to purchase about 50 thousand metric tons from the Polonnaruwa District alone.
