The Government is initiating measures to return civilian land acquired in the Jaffna Peninsula for security purposes.
Certain properties were acquired by the Defence sectors on behalf of security. Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa has said that only property and buildings needed for administrative activities will remain with the security forces and the others will be entrusted to land owners.
Action will be taken to grant compensation or alternative land for those which remain with the security forces. The Defence Secretary emphasized that not a single property had been acquired for forcible resettlement. Mr. Rajapaksa was testifying before the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission.
