A sudden operation was carried out in Colombo today to check on unhygienic hotels. Many hotels which had sold food unsuitable for consumption will be indicted.
Public Health Officers conducted the raid on several restaurants in the Colombo Fort area today to check on the conditions and hygiene levels in which the food was being prepared. The officials succeeded in nabbing several hotels which were in the process of preparing food in unhygienic conditions.
Colombo Municipal Commissioner Omar Khamil said they had the cooperation of the Police Environment Division which was assisting them to ensure that these establishments are not unhygienic. The Public Health Department of the Colombo Municipal Council had been regularly conducting inspections. However, he said today they had the assistance and cooperation of the Police to ensure that they are serious in what they were doing. He emphasized that if they do not comply with the instructions given by their Public Health Inspectors, then they would have to resort to the next course of action.
