Democratic National Alliance (DNA) parliamentarian Vijitha Herath today (19) lodged a complaint with the Inspector General of Police (IGP) at the Police Headquarters against the alleged assault on two DNA parliamentarians and 10 others last week by the Galle Police.
DNA sources told The Sunday Leader that Herath has complained that the Galle police had allegedly assaulted members of the DNA during a protest organized by the party in the Galle town last week. The DNA protested calling for the release of its party leader Sarath Fonseka
Herath has said that he and the others had been manhandled and assaulted by several policemen at the Galle police station when they had visited the police to protest against the unwarranted attack on the DNA protestors and the arrest of several of its members.
He had added that the assault was carried out while a senior officer looked on.
The Galle police for allegedly assaulting police officers arrested Herath and fellow MP Ajith Kumara and 10 others including a Provincial Councilor. Herath, Kumara and five others were released on bail on Monday (16).
