Today is the World Humanitarian Day. A special function was held at the United Nations Office premises in Colombo today under the patronage of Minister Basil Rajapaksa to mark the occasion.
It is for the second time that the World Humanitarian Day is being observed. The date of this observance marks the anniversary of the attack on UN Headquarters in Baghdad on 19th August 2003.
In December 2008 the United Nations declared this day in memory of the humanitarian workers who have made the ultimate sacrifice while striving to help those most in need in some of the world’s most hostile environments.
Minister Rishath Bathiuddeen and UN Resident Representative Neil Buhne participated in the function. The dignitaries also viewed an exhibition held in this connection.
