Plans are afoot to revive and uplift the Cashew industry in the North. Cashew cultivators in the North have been given an assurance that maximum relief would be granted for them with the Government’s mediation.
The assurance was given by Deputy Minister Sarath Gunaratne to cashew cultivators after an observation tour of cashew cultivations. Cashew plantations in Vavuniya, Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu are being developed. Cultivation on thousands of acres was neglected in the past due to terrorist activities. The Deputy Minister inspected an extend of 600 acres which had been hitherto cultivated with cashew at the Kaneshapuram village in Wellakulam, in addition to another extent of about 1000-acres located in the jungles at Thikwil in Jayapuram. Deputy Minister Sarath Gunaratne gave instructions to officials to process this land which is covered with shrubs for cashew re-cultivation.
