The Police have succeeded in tracking down several traders and residents who had been dumping garbage into the Mahaweli River.
The Police succeeded in arrest them following an operation launched under the dengue eradication programme. The Police said that they had been dumping garbage and other waste material into the Hatton Oya, a branch of the Mahaweli River. The traders and the residents were given a 14-day deadline to resort to an alternative measure. The Inspector of the Hatton Police T. Chandrasena said that they would be indicted if they failed to adhere to a streamlined strategy, in the disposal of their garbage during this period.
