The Labor Day holiday weekend starts early for the state highway patrol this year. Patrol cars will be out in force starting today looking for drunk drivers. The
Sober or Slammer! Labor Day enforcement blitz runs from Friday, August 20 through September 6th.
Drunk driving arrests - 9535 so far this year - are up 17 percent over last year. In a press release, Highway Patrol Col. Kenny Lancaster attributes the increased arrests to more pubic reports of drunk driving through a program that encourages drivers call *47 on the cell phones when they see dangerous behavior on the roads, along with the creation of a special 30-member DUI team.
