The Government has taken steps to legalize the land ownership of families who were displaced from their original native places during the war in the North and East.
Initially, the Land Reform Commission (LRC) has targeted awarding deeds to 10,000 families before the end of November for them to settle down in their original native places with proper land demarcation. Ownership of such lands of 50 families in Mannar and Batticaloa districts had been legalized and deeds had been already provided, LRC Chairman Nimal Punchihewa told the Daily News.
There are 25,000 displaced families that have already been identified through a survey conducted by the commission to award deeds, he added. Punchihewa said that a similar situation has also been reported from other parts of the country.
