There should be a common agreement hereafter when it comes to covering National events by media, especially the electronic media.
An open discussion with the participation of both state and private media will be organized to come to an agreement, Communication and Mass Media Minister and Cabinet Spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella said.
Addressing the weekly cabinet press briefing held at the Government Information Department Auditorium yesterday, Minister Rambukwella said that state and private media can telecast any program such as reality shows, live shows or anything but when it comes to covering National events, both the state and private media should work together. National Festivals such as the Dalada Perahera and the Madu Festival should be covered by both state and private media equally.
It is the media which should report the act of breaching law and point it out. Minister Rambukwella pointed out that some say that there is no media freedom in Sri Lanka but Sunday newspapers publish articles criticizing President Mahinda Rajapaksa and his family members. Children of some politicians could not attend to their schools because of some newspaper articles.
