Forty complaints of election violence reported ahead of nomination deadline
The accepting of nominations for the 2015 General Election will commence on July 6 and the Elections Secretariat says the deadline for submitting nominations is July 13.
Meanwhile, several incidents of election violence have been reported from various parts of the country.
A clash broke out between two groups of political supporters in the Polgahawela town July 4 night. The scuffle was prompted by an argument over an election campaign poster. Two people were injured in the clash while a three-wheeler was damaged.
A person involved in the incident stated that they were putting up posters in Polgahawela and as they were moving along, the UNP organiser beat them up, attacked his three wheeler and threatened them demanding that we leave before he killed them. Another individual added that they said that they cannot put up posters here and that it is the same for Mahinda or Maithri. They said it is their government and they do what they want, adding that they will attack all four of them.
The Elections Secretariat has received 40 complaints of election violence so far. These include complaints on incidents of election violence and the arbitrary granting of promotions and calling for interviews for jobs in the public sector.
