- newsfirst.lk

There has been an increase in the number of drug raids being carried out and also an increase in public awareness.

Two men who were transporting cannabis and heroin to Akkaraipattu and Kalmunai were arrested in Pottuvil on July 5, where police have seized about 8 kilogrammes of marijuana and a lorry that was being used to transport the drugs.

Meanwhile, in another raid conducted in Bandarawela, police seized 34 packets of marijuana and three men who had the drugs in their possession were taken into custody.

Another raid on 2nd Cross Street in Pettah, Colombo, resulted in the police seizing a stash of heroin and arresting one man. Eight grams of heroin were seized and in another raid carried out in Gona Hena, Kadawatha following which an interrogation of the suspect led to the arrest of another man in Peliyagoda. Police also seized 11 grammes of heroin. Another man in possession of heroin was arrested during a raid carried out in Ratmalana.

All of these suspects were carrying only small amounts of heroin; and the drug peddlers keep just enough heroin as a strategy to ensure that they will not be denied bail in the even they are arrested.

News 1st revealed that narcotic drugs are entering the country through the coast and the people residing along the coast of the island, are now rallying against the illegal drug trade.

Residents of the Munnakkaraya Fisheries Village in Negombo staged a demonstration on July 5. One person added that there are a number of dealers in Negombo and it is very easy to transport drugs brought from abroad on the boat. Another added that the drug trafficking is high in the area and that the police only demand money but do not arrest the dealers.

Another person, speaking against the drug trade, stated that it is quite significant that the drugs are increased in the area and it has also spread in schools and among children. They went on to thank Sirasa for organising awareness programmes and saving their children from the drug menace
