A meeting to aware the guidelines to be followed by Media in Election period
A special meeting was held today (06) at the Human Rights Commission under the patronage of Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya to caution the heads of electronic and print media organizations about the guidelines which should adhere by media in the election period.
Election Commissioner informed the media heads about the guidelines that should follow by the media under in terms of provisions in the Article 23 (05) of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution of the Sri Lanka.
And further he said that according to the above article, in particular to ensure voting at an election or referendum shall be free and fair, these guidelines are issued by the Commissioner of Election/ Election Commission, to be followed by all electronic and print media institutions and personnel involved.
The Election Commissioner said that for a free and fair election, it is vital to get support from the media and media should be more systematic to use a regulatory mechanism to conduct media but it should be a system that protect the ethics.
