The following is a conversation News 1st had with Dr. Nilanga Samarasinghe:
Question – You said about 20 persons have been identified. Who are they?
Answer – Under the current circumstances, only the party secretaries can divulge the information. The board’s lawyers have clearly informed us of the legal framework.
Question – I believe that this is the report you have.
Answer – Yes.
Question – How many politicians have been identified for involvement in the heroin trade?
Answer – With regard to persons involved in heroin, I can tell you that it is like an iceberg. You can only see the tip of the iceberg.
Question – Is the majority from this province?
Answer – The Western Province. The situation is especially dangerous in the Colombo and Gampaha districts.
Question – We saw that a very prominent Colombo District Parliamentarian was accused in the drug trade. Is he in this report?
Answer – Yes. He is in this report. There are politicians from Colombo, Gampaha, Ratnapura and even the Central Province, in this report.
Question – There was a lot of controversy surrounding a certain politician in the recent past. Is this person in the report?
Answer – Yes, we have noted such information. If a corrupt person or criminal who has drug charges against them enters parliament, then the party general secretaries must be held responsible. I think the people need to make a decision on the party secretaries at this time.
