Friday Forum issues urgent call to political parties and voters
Social activists group Friday Forum has sought to consolidate and bolster the progressive social and political gains made in the Jan. 8. Issuing a press release titled ‘An Urgent Call to Political Parties and Voters,’ the group said the country cannot afford to roll back fragile democratic gains.
The Friday Forum says that the Sri Lankan society currently enjoys a greater amount of personal liberty and security and the country has seen the decline of ethno-religious extremism.
The release reiterates the call of the March 12th Declaration that seeks to completely eradicate corruption, nepotism, intimidation and other forms of violence used to coerce people. The Friday Forum further says that the country would be best served by candidates with a strong democratic ethic and who respect the pluralistic character of Sri Lanka.
To this end, they urge the voting public to reject parties that nominate candidates who abuse authority in order to gain electoral popularity, particularly those who endorse violence.
