July 07, 2015 (LBO) – Sri Lanka’s former President, Mahinda Rajapaksa obtaining nomination for the general election will help the United National Party win more votes, a former deputy Minister said.

“Mahinda Rajapaksa getting nomination and contesting the August general elections will only be an added advantage for the UNP to win more votes,” Ajith P Perera, former deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs said.

“We managed to defeat Mahinda Rajapaksa on the 8th of January when he was very powerful and had control of the state media and other organizations,”

“Now he is very weak, politically – if he contests this time he will lose, maybe he will secure a parliamentary seat but not be able to become the Prime Minister.”

He added, UNP will be the only political entity which is able to obtain majority of votes at the upcoming general election as all the other party’s are having issues.

“Only the UNP can get more than 113 votes in the August elections,”

“The other parties are having issues. The Sri Lanka Freedom Party is splitting up and the Janatha Vimukthi Peremuna is also having problems.”

Perera also said that there is surge for young people with fresh ideas in the political arena of the Island.

“There has been a massive change in the mind set of the people of this country; they are looking for leaders with new and fresh ideas not the same old people.”

He was speaking to media at a press conference held Monday at Colombo.
