Phone makers in talks to end use of sim cards
July 19, 2015 (LBO) – International phone makers Apple and Samsung are in advanced talks to produce phones with embedded SIMs that will make use of SIM cards obsolete.
Industry associations such as GSMA together with phone makers are working on a ‘common architecture’ which could take at least one year to deploy, the UK-based Financial Times reported.
E-chips would allow users to switch carriers easily making it similar to Apple SIMs launched recently for the iPad Air 2 which works on multiple carriers.
“With the majority of operators on board, the plan is to finalize the technical architecture that will be used in the development of an end-to-end remote SIM solution for consumer devices, with delivery anticipated by 2016,” GSMA said, according to the report.
