PM, Field Marshal Fonseka, Anura Kumara and Sajith Premadasa speak on the political stage
Views were expressed by the political party leaders ahead of the August 17, parliamentary elections.
Leader of the UNP, Ranil Wickremesinghe in Mulaitivu stated:
There 500 inmates and we are working towards releasing everyone except those who have cases against them as well working towards providing compensation to families of persons proven to have disappeared
He further added that there are many single-mother households in this area because of the war. The Prime Minister said:
We will introduce a programme that will assist these single mother households and widows in the area and also establish the truth commission, similar to the one in South Africa to resolve many issues.
He added that the wounds must heal.
Leader of the Democratic Party, Sarath Fonseka stated that the aspirations and aims of the people are no more and their lives are meaningless because they voted for the thugs and ruffians to protect the party. Field Marshal Fonseka said:
So we urge the people not to repeat this mistake – think about your lives and speak to your conscience.
UNP Hambantota District Candidate, Sajith Premadasa noted that they protested, screamed, sent messages, burnt an effigy and the princes who never stand in the sun arrived before my ministry and yelled and they said that Sajith Premadasa was a rogue. But I am not swindling the money from the Samurdhi.
He added:
You are aware that the Samurdhi funds were used for the election campaigns in the past. However, today we have not laid our hands on a single cent from the innocent persons or from the Samurdhi beneficiaries.
Leader of the JVP,Anura Kumara Dissanayake stated that under the Rajapaksa government, and with the blessings of Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, various forces were created to incite conflicts among the Sinhala and Muslim communities.
He questioned what was done back then.
He added:
I called for debate on this matter in Parliament and when I stood up to speak, Hakeem leaves even though I told him to wait and listen and Rishad Bathiyutheen was not in Parliament – and these are your leaders.
He added that the right to speak and the right to follow one’s religious needs to be accepted and there is only one party that accepts it, and that is the JVP.
