General Election 2015: Yesterday's Postal voting peaceful
The casting of postal ballots for the upcoming Parliamentary elections commenced yesterday and it is reported that postal voting was peaceful around the country.
567,291 were qualified to cast postal votes. Officers of the Police Department, officials of the Education Department and school teachers were given an opportunity to cast their postal votes yesterday. Other public employees including members of the Armed Forces will be able to vote on the 05th and 06th of this month. Officials of the Elections Department and District Secretariats will be casting their postal ballots on the 08th of this month. Police Officers and officials of the Education Department who were unable to cast their votes today will be given an opportunity to vote on the 08th.
Casting of postal votes within Education Offices and all Police Stations within the Hambantota District also took place yesterday. Hambantota District Returning Officer R.C. de Soysa said that four teams of election officials were deployed for the casting of postal ballots yesterday.
Casting of postal votes was carried out at 276 Centres in the Ratnapura District. The number of voters eligible to cast postal ballots in the District is 24,136.
Casting of postal votes in the Badulla District took place at 284 Centres. The number eligible to exercise their postal votes was 31,777.
State employees in the Matara District showed a keen interest in casting their postal votes. 25,205 are qualified to exercise their postal votes for the elections.
Postal votes were cast at 17 Police Stations and seven Education Offices in the Digamadulla District. The total number of qualified postal voters in the Digamadulla District is 20,494.
Postal voting in the Batticaloa District took place successfully at 14 Education Offices and 12 Police Stations. It is reported that postal voting took place in a peaceful environment.
Casting of postal votes in other districts also took place on a successful note. It is reported that public employees displayed keen enthusiasm in the casting of their postal votes.
