Cop opens fire during tense situation in Akkaraipattu

A policeman opened fire on a group of people during a tense situation which arose in Akkaraipattu last night.

The Police media unit said that the tense situation arose after a motorcyclist was ordered to stop at a Police check-point.

According to the Police, the motorcyclist was travelling at extreme speed and toppled when ordered to stop near the Police check-point.

The motorcyclist sustained injuries in the incident and was admitted to hospital.

An angry mob had then arrived at the location and attacked the Police and set fire to the check-point.

A senior Police officer who arrived at the location was also attacked.

The Police media unit said that a policeman who was at the location had then oepned fire injuring one person.

At least 10 Police and Civil Defence Force members and 2 civilians are receiving treatment in hospital following the incident. (Colombo Gazette)
