Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna fills vacancy left by murdered legislator
ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Laka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) member Jagath Samarawickrama was sworn in as an MP Thursday (19) morning to fill the vacancy left by SLPP Polonnaruwa district MP Amarakeerthi Athukorala who was killed in a retaliatory mob attack on May 09 after govt supporters attacked peaceful protestors.
An extraordinary gazette issued on Samarawickrama’s appointment on Wednesday (18).
“The Election Commission, in the exercise of the powers vested in the Election Commission by Section 64 (2) of the Parliamentary Elections Act, No. 1 of 1981, does hereby notify that Mr. S. Jagath Samarawickrama has been declared elected as a Member of the Ninth Parliament for the Electoral District No. 18 – Polonnaruwa to fill the vacancy caused by reason of death of Mr. Amarakeerthi Athukorala,” the gazette said.
