President sends resignation letter
President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has sent in his resignation letter to Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena.
The letter will be authenticated before a formal announcement is made.
With his resignation Ranil Wickremesinghe will be President. Wickremesinghe is currently the Acting President.
He has requested the Speaker to call on party leaders to name a new Prime Minister through consensus.
Rajapaksa sent his letter after reaching Singapore from the Maldives.
He was scheduled to send his letter yesterday (Saturday) but had delayed it till he reached Singapore.
Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled Sri Lanka following massive protests which led to his official residence in Fort being stormed by protesters. (Colombo Gazette)
