Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne has said that the Government’s desire is to build a peaceful environment by creating religious harmony after the liberation of the country from terrorism.
The Prime Minister said it is evident when one looks at other countries in the world that Sri Lanka has been protected by the Maha Sangha. The Maha Sangha protected not only the Buddha Sasana but also the culture and civilization. He said that the country could get on its feet due to the commitment of the Maha Sangaha. Therefore protecting the Maha Sangha means protecting the country, religion and the civilization. He said that this has an influence on moulding the future generation as well.
The Prime Minister was speaking at a function at the Dharmendrarama Temple in Mt. Lavinia. It was organized to lay the foundation stone for the proposed healthcare centre for the Buddhist Monks. Members of the Maha Sangha led by the chief incumbent of the Bellanwila temple Prof. Ven. Bellanwila Wimalaratana thera were present on the occasion.
