Water supply restored to several areas: NWSDB
Water supply to the Colombo, Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte and Dehiwala – Mount Lavinia Municipalities was disrupted again on Friday August 28 as a result of oil contaminating the water in the Kelani River, from which water is obtained to the Ambatale Water Treatment Plant.
According to the National Water Supply and Drainage Board, the water supply has been restored to many areas.
The oil contamination of the water in the Kelani River happened for the second time in two weeks, forcing the Ambatale Water Treatment Plant to suspend the supply of water.
Thereby the National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) noted that the water supply to the Colombo, Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte and Dehiwala, Mount Lavinia Municipalities were limited for several hours.
Eighty five percent of the water requirement from Colombo is provided from the Ambatale Water Treatment Plant.
Water that is sent from Ambatale to the supply centres in Maligakanda, Eli House, Kotte and Dehiwala is later supplied to the municipalities of those areas.
According to Ranjith Perera, the Deputy General Manager of the NWSDB, two vessels have been utilised in the investigation to identify the source of the oil which contaminated the river.
